Labs Report 34: Gaussian Splatting: Accessible High-End 3D
How Gaussian Splatting is changing 3D content production
Evolving from photogrammetry, Gaussian Splatting and NeRFs—two emerging means of reconstructing physical objects virtually in real time using images from multiple points of view—are maturing with impressive precision and realistic results. In this Labs report, we'll uncover how Gaussian Splatting works and how the creative community is unlocking new possibilities using this technology.
In this report, you will learn:
- What Gaussian Splatting, NeRFs and Photogrammetry are
- The similarities and differences of these technologies
- How to use Gaussian Splatting
- What the future holds using this technology
This technology isn't just an amazing high-end 3D production tool; it’s making production accessible and is changing the way we conceptualize and build immersive virtual experiences.
A stunning ecommerce experience with simple production
We built a realistic 3D visualization for a white label ecommerce platform using Gaussian Splatting. With nothing more than a smartphone and simple lighting, we challenged ourselves to create a high-end 3D scene. The prototype inspires ideas of how the ecommerce journey transforms on a Gaussian Splatting-supported website, where customers can interact directly with real, 3D captures of products. We think this will be especially valuable for things like the secondhand car market. Find more information about the prototype and how we built it in our report.
