A person seen from behind wearing a wide-brimmed tan hat and an ochre jacket, gazing out at a vast, rugged mountain range and evergreen forest under a clear blue sky.

Every April follows the same, predictable transformation: corporate logos turn green, LinkedIn feeds swell with pledges of sustainability, and the marketing landscape becomes crowded with environmental symbolism. For the modern brand, however, this annual flood of content has created a visibility paradox. In feeds rampant with “greenwashing,” the challenge is no longer being seen, but instead being believed.

The gap between marketing narratives and operational reality is closing. Consumers and investors have moved past the surface-level story and are now inspecting the marketing operating system itself—a shift in scrutiny underscored in our upcoming Monks 2025 ESG Report. They want to see that a company's environmental responsibility is baked into its infrastructure rather than tacked on as a manual override.

So, what effective sustainability strategies actually remain? The most credible work exemplifies true stewardship: the practice of building digital tools that make environmental responsibility the default.

Moving from awareness to tangible action calls for a shift in how brands deploy their core capabilities. Here are three ways brands are starting to bridge that gap: through connectivity that deepens human experience, intelligence that scales scientific discovery, and digital utility that accelerates the clean energy transition.

Connectivity provides the freedom to disconnect.

There is a fundamental tension in how we interact with the natural world today. It’s difficult to protect what we don’t value, and it’s difficult to value what we don’t experience firsthand. Yet, the very tools we use to navigate and share those experiences—our devices—can sometimes act as the primary barrier to presence.

T-Mobile and the National Park Foundation (NPF) addressed this friction by leaning into a seemingly counterintuitive narrative for a telecommunications giant: “Do Not Disturb” Season. The partnership turns the utility of a network on its head. Usually, we talk about “more bars” as a reason to stay engaged with our screens. Here, T-Mobile's 5G infrastructure—bolstered by satellite-to-device connectivity—serves as a safety net that delivers peace of mind, even in the most remote environments.

This invitation was extended through a modular video framework designed to bring the scale of the parks to the masses. By building an adaptable creative system, the brand could feature different talent while maintaining a consistent presence throughout the year. For urban audiences, the invitation took a physical form via the Magenta Base Camp at New York’s Grand Central Station. This immersive activation whisked commuters out of the city and into a simulated wilderness, transforming a transit hub into a portal for exploration.

Crucially, this campaign is backed by institutional action. T-Mobile committed up to $1 million to the NPF to support its vision to inspire all people to connect with and protect America’s national parks. It’s an example of a brand using its massive invisible infrastructure to facilitate a deeper, safer relationship with the environment.

Intelligence accelerates research and innovation.

While connectivity creates the space for us to value nature, intelligence provides the means to protect it. In this respect, AI has incredible potential to overcome the global biodiversity crisis. We are currently losing species at a rate that outpaces our ability to document them; traditional field research is slow, expensive, and geographically limited. But efficiency unlocked by AI offers a new path.

Developed with Google Arts & Culture, Google DeepMind and WildMon, “Forest Listeners” was designed to solve this data bottleneck, which the scientific community refers to as the “taxonomic impediment.” The app transforms thousands of hours of raw rainforest audio—often a chaotic wall of sound—into organized, actionable data for community-led conservation efforts. It invites the public to engage in citizen science by helping identify specific animal calls within Brazil’s Amazon and Atlantic Forests.

A digital, point-cloud visualization of a forest floor. The image is composed of millions of tiny glowing particles in shades of teal, green, and gold, forming the silhouettes of thick tree trunks and broad-leafed plants against a black background.
Three women interact with an immersive digital exhibit in a dimly lit room filled with lush tropical plants. A central vertical screen displays the title "Forest Listeners" and invites visitors to help scientists identify rainforest sounds.

The app effectively open-sources the labor of protecting these fragile ecosystems. When it was showcased at COP30, it demonstrated that AI “for good” is most effective when it moves out of the lab and into the hands of the global community. Stewardship, in this sense, is about providing the intelligence necessary to understand an ecosystem before it faces irreversible loss.

Utility turns clean energy into prosperity.

For the average small business, the energy transition has historically been presented as a zero-sum game: protect the planet or protect the margin. Viewed this way, renewable power is less an investment than an expense—a moral nice-to-have that thin bottom lines cannot always justify.

Serena Energia, one of Brazil’s pioneering renewable energy companies, challenged this binary with a 360° strategy titled “Put Your Energy in the Right Place.” Starring Brazilian country singer Simone Mendes, the campaign moved past typical climate advocacy and focused on the pragmatic prosperity of SMBs.

The strategy combined high-impact films and educational social content with an AI activation to deliver personalized promotions. By focusing on wind-powered regions, the campaign used digital precision to drive awareness of renewable energy solutions and lower the barrier for businesses to make the switch. This approach moved away from broad awareness and toward shifting consumer behavior, demonstrating that a reduced environmental footprint can be framed as a credible path to lower-carbon choices.

This evolution moves the role of the brand from storyteller to enabler. When a brand provides the utility that makes the responsible choice also the best for growth, sustainability ceases to be a marketing campaign and becomes a business imperative.

Systemic action replaces the seasonal pledge.

When it comes to protecting the planet, the most effective strategies move from giving a narrative to providing an infrastructure. While institutional markers like Global B Corp Certification and SBTi-approved science-based targets provide the necessary framework for accountability, the work itself provides the proof. True stewardship goes beyond the seasonal pledge; it’s found in the code of a biodiversity app, the infrastructure of a national 5G network, and the digital tools that normalize clean energy for businesses of any size. Moving toward a planet-positive future requires building these systems that make a more sustainable future inevitable.

The setting is lush and green, suggesting a connection between technology and nature. Sunlight filters through the foliage in the background.

This Earth Day, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the inspiring ways brands and organizations are stepping up to protect our planet. From bold sustainability commitments and innovative conservation efforts to the integration of eco-friendly practices into everyday business, their actions prove that environmental responsibility can take countless forms.

Sustainability is a core value that shapes everything we do—represented in our commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2040 and achieve 100% renewable energy use by that same year. Beyond those ambitions, we’re embedding sustainability into every facet of our operations, from championing eco-friendly work practices and technological innovations to upholding transparent reporting.

As we celebrate Earth Day, we’re honored to partner with brands who share this vision and are making an impact in unique ways. In the stories that follow, I’ll highlight how some of our clients are leading by example—proving that environmental responsibility can be woven into business at every level, and that together, we can help build a healthier, more sustainable future for all.

Powerful experiences can spark collective action.

We’ve been longtime supporters of Amazon’s sustainability efforts, beginning with our involvement in the launch of The Climate Pledge—a commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040—which we also signed in 2021. Building on this foundation, we worked alongside Amazon to create a dedicated sustainability platform that would centralize their initiatives and progress, shaping its strategy, design and user experience to make complex information accessible.

As the partnership evolved, we developed comprehensive brand guidelines and led a full redesign of the Amazon Sustainability website. This work established a consistent visual and narrative identity for Amazon’s sustainability communications. Our collaboration continued as we brought Amazon’s Sustainability Report to life online, transforming dense data into dynamic, engaging digital storytelling year after year.

Most recently, we helped launch the Amazon Sustainability Exchange, an interactive website designed to educate and spark action. Each of these projects has allowed us to support Amazon’s sustainability communications across a broad range of digital experiences.

Helping kids connect with nature makes the need for conservation tangible.

Mandai Wildlife Reserve is on a mission to connect people with nature and ignite a lifelong passion for conservation—beginning with the youngest explorers. As the home to over 1,000 animal species, Mandai set out to transform the way children experience wildlife, inventing a first-of-its-kind pair of binoculars designed specifically for kids.

We partnered with Mandai to bring this vision to life, building innovative binoculars that turn a simple day at the park into a gamified adventure. By blending cutting-edge technology with scientifically accurate content, we created an experience that kids and parents can enjoy together—making learning about biodiversity both fun and meaningful.

This project was the culmination of over two years of research, design and development. The result? Learning that leaps beyond the classroom and into the heart of the wild. Thousands of children have already set off on personal journeys through Mandai’s parks, discovering the wonders of animals and nature through interactive, memorable adventures.

But Mandai’s mission goes far beyond the park gates. Their vision is to bring conservation education to classrooms everywhere, nurturing a new generation of nature lovers and wildlife guardians. By making conservation accessible, engaging and exciting, Mandai is paving the way for a brighter, greener future, one young explorer at a time.

Smarter business practices can make sustainability part of the routine.

Sustainability doesn’t always require sweeping changes—sometimes, it’s about making smarter choices in day-to-day business. In their quest for more engaging and efficient advertising, Evian adopted adaptive streaming technology for their creatives. By delivering instant-loading, high-quality ads that automatically adjust to each viewer’s connection speed, they improved the user experience and unlocked new levels of campaign effectiveness.

We helped Evian implement this forward-thinking approach, powered by SeenThis, ensuring that ads were only streamed while actually in view. This not only reduced unnecessary data transfers and improved performance but also lowered the carbon emissions associated with digital media delivery. While the primary goal was to connect with audiences more effectively, the campaign demonstrated how incremental operational changes—like rethinking how ads are served—can also contribute to a lighter digital footprint.

Evian’s experience is a reminder that making things better for people can also be better for the planet. Even small shifts in everyday practices can add up to a meaningful impact.

Leading by example inspires others to make sustainability the norm.

In reflecting upon these stories, it’s clear that there’s no single path to sustainability; every organization can make a difference in its own way. Whether it’s setting bold goals, reimagining education for the next generation, or making everyday operations a little bit greener, these efforts all contribute to a more hopeful future for our planet.

Earth Day reminds us that progress happens through collective action, creativity and a willingness to lead by example. We’re proud to work alongside brands that are not only raising the bar for themselves, but also inspiring others to rethink what’s possible. Together, we can keep moving forward—one initiative, one innovation and one small step at a time—toward a world where sustainability is second nature.

At Monks, our ESG approach is embedded into how we operate, grow and create value.

As a digital-first business, our impact is shaped less by physical production and more by how we use data, technology and talent. This allows us to scale our operations while reducing resource intensity and environmental impact.

Our approach focuses on three interconnected areas: how we reduce our environmental footprint, how we support and develop our people, and how we deliver responsible, future-facing solutions for our clients. These priorities are integrated into our governance, decision-making and day-to-day operations, ensuring ESG is not a standalone agenda but part of how we run our business.

Our ESG strategy is built on three core pillars:

  • Our Responsibility to the World
  • People Fulfilment
  • One Brand
A glass orb that has birds flying across a blue sky within it.

Our Responsibility to the World
(Environment)

We’ve achieved a 31.7% absolute reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions (market-based) compared with our 2022 STBi baseline, moving us closer to our goal of net zero by 2040.

Our Scope 1 and 2 emissions decreased year over year, while our share of renewable energy consumed in operations rose to 43.4%. We partner with organisations and support initiatives that focus on making a positive difference for people and the planet. Our Purpose-driven client base grew by 16.8%, while projects for Purpose-driven clients increased 11.1% year over year.

People Fulfilment
(Social)

We’ve prioritised workforce resilience by transitioning to an AI-first operating model, moving talent from legacy workstreams into high-value, tech-augmented roles to build a future-ready, empowered and capable workforce.

At Monks we are actively working to close the gap and reduce barriers to entry for talent in our industry. Alongside ensuring our programmes build a diverse and vibrant workforce, we actively encourage representation from groups that are often underrepresented in advertising and technology.
